Meet the Staff
Clark Layden
Lab Manager and Co-Owner
Clark started his apprenticeship and training as an optician in 1972 with Hauck Opticians in Red Deer, Alberta. At the time, the apprenticeship was three years, with of two of those years being for correspondence. He received his license to practice in 1975.
More About Clark Layden
That same year he took over the management of Hauck Opticians in Stettler. In 1984, Clark was transferred to Drumheller to manage H&H Optical. Three years later Clark and 3 other dispensers, that were also employed at Hauck Opticians, purchased H&H Optical from the original owners, Karl and Helga Hauck. By 1990, Clark bought out the other 3 partners and became the owner of H&H Optical along with his wife, Donna. They still own and operate the business today.
While Clark and Donna were still living in Stettler, Clark was approached by Dr. Jerry Leinweber, an Optometrist from Red Deer, to see if he would be interested in becoming involved in a registered charity called Canadian Vision Care. CVC was established by Dr. Leinweber with other Optometrists while they were students, to get hands on experience dealing with the tropical eye conditions they were studying. On each of these trips, Clark was the optical dispenser on the team. The team consisted of 3 to 4 Optometrists, and 1 dispenser. All the teams donated their time and knowledge, free of charge, and the patients were given free eyeglasses. In many cases, eye surgeons also donated their expertise and performed surgery for cataracts, and other conditions, resulting from swimming in polluted stagnant water.
Clark has been in charge of acquiring frame donations from several suppliers in exchange for a tax receipt. As the dispenser, Clark determined which of the available frames would best suit the patient and their prescription. Then he completes the measurements required to make eyeglasses for each person seen by the Optometrist.
Clark has made a trip a year to places such as Jamaica, the Philippines, Ghana, and Malawi. In total, he has spent over 40 years traveling to these destinations, donating two weeks of his time for each trip.
