About the Owners

Clark and Donna Leyden

Clark first started in the optical industry 1974 in Red Deer as an apprentice Optical Dispenser working for Karl Hauck at Hauck Opticians. Donna met Clark while she was attending Red Deer College. In 1975 they decided to get married and continued to live in Red Deer until the spring of 1976 when they moved to Stettler where Clark was promoted to manager of the Hauck Opticians located there.  That is where they started their family. Mr. and Mrs. Hauck started a new chain of optical stores in the early 1980’s called H&H Optical. The Drumheller location opened it’s doors in 1981 by Karl and Helga Hauck and four employees who were now their partners. Clark Layden, Dick Huebner. Dale Ward, and Tom Todd. After a series of managers, it was decided that Clark and Donna would move from Stettler to Drumheller, and Clark would take over the management of H&H Optical in October 1984. The business started to thrive and by 1986 Clark and Dick were the only remaining partners. Donna was working part-time at the office until their youngest daughter started school. She began her career as an optician and graduated with her diploma in 1990. By this time Donna purchased the shares still owned by Dick Huebner and became Clark’s business partner as well as his life partner.  In 1991 the office expanded from 600 square feet to 1600 square feet which included an in-house edging lab, an Optometrists exam room, and a much larger dispensary. Over the years the office has undergone a few renovations and staff changes. Clark semi retired in 2006 but still retained his Opticians License and his Hearing Aid Practitioners Certification until 2019. He still does the majority of the lens edging, but we now are fortunate enough to have one of our employees, Rayleen Paschke, who can step in to perform that task as well, if needed.

We at H&H Optical and Hearing Center would like to inform you that we have been notified by our Professional College and Dr. Johnson, by his Association, that we are listed as one of the essential services that are included in Stage 1 of the relaunch plan for Alberta.

Our staff will be available to take your calls for eye exam appointments as of Monday May 4th, 2020.  Dr. Johnson has said he will be booking appointments as early as May 4th for regular eye exams, but emergencies will be given priority.

Restrictions will apply as far as social distancing, wearing of masks, and sanitizing.

It will be some time before we can return to business as usual, if ever, so we must maintain the new normal and follow all of COVID-19 safety protocols in order to protect ourselves and our customers.

At this time, we have not heard whether we can resume seeing our hearing aid patients from our College of Hearing Aid Practitioners Association, but will keep you informed.
